Family photography blog posts by Joanna Carina of Carina Photographics. Each blog post features behind-the-scenes information about a family photography session by Joanna Carina, a sampling of the photographs she took during the session, as well as a personalized message to each family. Family photographs are one of the most important heirlooms that families can have. Documenting family members as they are at certain points of their lives is a treasured memory that becomes more priceless with the passing of time. Photography captures that moment in time and preserves it for years, and generations, to come. Carina Photographics specializes in everything from maternity sessions, to newborn sessions, to family sessions, and even on to senior sessions, engagement sessions and weddings, so entire life cycles can be captured for you. Kelly and Joe might hold a record among all of my wedding couples: most amount of years together prior to getting married. They have a nine year old daughter to prove it! They finally decided to “make it official”, and will be holding their big day later in the fall of this year. Instead of a simple engagement session, they wanted to incorporate their daughter Ayla and make it a hybrid engagement session AND family session all in one. Such a great idea!
Their location of choice was the downtown St Paul Public Library (George Latimer Central Library.) Kelly chose it for her love of books, and Joe chose it for his love of classic architecture. It was the perfect spot! And even though it had been a rainy day, the rain stopped long enough for us to get a few images of them outside the library as well.
We spent time photographing Kelly + Joe alone, Ayla alone, and the three of them together. It was so fun being immersed in the stacks and rows of thousands of books, as well as appreciating the beautiful structure of the historic building itself. There were so many rooms and areas to work in, we were unable to make it everywhere we were hoping before the library closed for the day.
Once they reviewed their images, they chose to order an heirloom canvas wall art tryptic of some favorites from their session: one image of Ayla, one image of Kelly + Joe, and one of all three of them together. I cannot wait to see the final artwork!
Kelly, Joe and Ayla – it was so much fun working with you! I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, and I am so excited for your big day this fall. Best of luck with your wedding planning!
2016 – what a year!
For me, a Minneapolis Wedding Photographer (and engagement and portrait photographer), 2016 was full of amazing experiences, beautiful venues, along with wonderful couples and their families and friends.
A few highlights include several of my “old favorite” venues – a spectacular wedding-in-the-round at Aria Minneapolis; the beautiful Church of the Assumption in St Paul; the ever-stunning Minnesota Landscape Arboretum; the regal Landmark Center in St Paul; and the classic Saint Paul Hotel.
A few new entries in my 2016 weddings include two events at the beautiful Minneapolis Club; the amazing architecture of the Minnesota History Center; the sumptuous Trellis Weddings & Events in Stillwater; the rustic spaciousness of the TPC Golf Club; and even a spectacular Muslim and Indian wedding celebration that lasted several days. It was so much fun, I am so honored to have worked with such amazing people!
I haven’t even touched on the awesome engagement sessions I was lucky to be a part of, including such places as Father Hennepin Bluffs, the Como Park Conservatory, Boom Island, Mears Park, and Hidden Falls Regional Park. Nor have I mentioned the fun I’ve had working with families and their newborns, as well as headshots for several of my corporate clients. I love working with each and every one!
2017 is starting off quickly with my first wedding this coming weekend (again, at the beautiful MN Landscape Arboretum!) I’ll be blogging about my latest activities soon, so in the meantime I wanted to take a look back and reminisce on some of my favorite images from the people I worked with in 2016.
I feel so lucky to have gotten to know and spend time with each of my clients, and to see their life stages and love they have for each other (as well as their family and friends). It is so wonderful to spend time with people during some of the biggest events of their lives. I hope all of my clients know how much I truly appreciate getting to know them, knowing their beautiful spirits and seeing their love and lives in front of my eyes. I enjoy spending my time with them, and I look forward to spending time with my 2017 clients too!
Jeff Troldahl and I met way back in our college days. He was one of the warmest, happiest and nicest guys around (oh, and did I mention one of the funniest too? He’ll have you laughing so hard you’ll be crying within about 5 minutes!) So of course I jumped at the chance a few years ago to photograph his wedding to Katie, his girlfriend of several years, and such a sweet and wonderful person herself. They are such an awesome couple, and I love spending time with them.
Fast forward to 2016, and Jeff + Katie’s son Thomas Jeffrey was born! I was SO excited to be able to photograph them as a family together. We spent several hours at their house for a lifestyle newborn/family photography session. This basically means we just hang out for a few hours together and follow Thomas’ lead on what we should do together. Want to eat? No problem, we’ll photograph you doing that. Need a change? NBD, we’re here for you, and will get a few shots of that too. Finally in the mood for a nap? Great! We’ll dress you up in a cute outfit and photograph you sleeping, or else hanging out with mom and dad. So many options, so little time!
Once we finished up their session, I had the three of them out to my studio a couple of weeks later for their Image Reveal and Ordering Session. They were thrilled with their images! And it’s always amazing to see how much their little guy has changed in just the few weeks since I’ve last seen him. Jeff + Katie settled on an album, birth announcements and a few gift prints from their session images.
Jeff + Katie, I am so honored that you worked with me and so lucky to know you. And I love that I can photograph you in these stages of your life together! I wish you a wonderful life together with your new little man Thomas!
